Pong Leather Touch Review

Pong Research Leather Touch Review – Protecting your phone, and your head…

At this point, most everyone is aware of the fact that your cell phone puts out low levels of radiation.  Whether or not those levels are high enough to cause harm is still something that’s being debated, but most signs point to ‘yes’.  Quite honestly, we don’t think it’s worth risking, and that’s why we were excited to get our hands on a Pong Research Leather Touch for review.  We’ll cover two things today: Does the case really work?,  and How good of a case is it?

Construction and Appearance
The Pong Leather touch is undoubtedly attractive. It sports a faux leather shell which feels good in the hand, and looks good on the desk.  The color of the case featured in our review is what Pong Research refers to as ‘black’, but realistically, it’s more of a dark gray accented by a secondary brown color.  There are two accent lines across the back, with the ‘pong’ name imprinted as well.  One of the cool things about this case is that it doesn’t actually feel like plastic.  It feels silky to the touch, and it’s a nice subtlety when holding the iPhone in your hand.  The cameral cutout is nicely beveled, however, it still results in some minor glare when using the flash.

Around the bottom of the iPhone, the Leather Touch allows for easy access of the phone’s charging port, and unhindered audio from the speakers.  Same goes for the headphone jack, slider, sleep, and volume buttons.

Does it Work?
Looking at it strictly from an aesthetic point of view, the Pong Leather Touch is a great looking case.  But what sets this case apart from the pack is that Pong claims it actually redirects your phones radiation away from your precious head.  Does it really work? This is the million dollar question, but so far, all (scientifically substantiated) evidence points to yes.  We don’t have the proper laboratory equipment to actually test this claim, but what we do have is the time to research the results of laboratory’s that do.  To understand how this case actually works, you need to understand a few things.  These things are:  SAR and EFI radiation.  Simply put, SAR is the rate at which an object absorbs radiation, and EFI is the intensity of the electric field which creates the radiation.  On average, Pong cases decrease the SAR by >60%, and the EFI by >85%.  Not only does your head absorb less radiation, but the amount still absorbed is of even less intensity.  The Pong case does not eliminate the radiation.  Instead, it redirects it safely up and away from your head.  These results have been duplicated and substantiated by both Cetecom and RF Exposure Lab.  These independently owned laboratories also do testing for the FCC, among others.  According to the scientific research, the case works, and it does decrease radiation substantially.

Protection + Things To Consider
While the Pong Leather Touch does a good job at protecting your head, it doesn’t offer a ton of protection for your phone.  This would definitely be what we would consider a ‘minimalist’ case, and as such, offers minimal protection.  That being said, we consider the iPhone to be a pretty tough device.  As long as you’re not very abusive to your gadgets, a Pong case should offer you acceptable protection against normal use. We feel pong could have improved the case by adding a small amount of shock absorbing material to the inside of the case, and increasing the height of the sides of the case ever so slightly.  This would have provided a bit more protection for the front glass.  Overall, none of these factors are deal-breakers for us, and we still feel confident recommending the Pong Leather touch as an option for your iPhone.

Our Review in Summary
The Pong Leather Touch case does what it sets out to do: decrease the amount of radiation absorbed by your head. When you think about the fact that you are absorbing radiation every time you talk on your phone, it really highlights the true value of this case. Couple that with the fact that it looks great as well, and the Pong Leather touch really starts to build a strong case.  As of now, this is the only case of it’s kind, and if radiation is something you’re concerned about, it should definitely be at the top of your list.
