Snugg iPad 2 Case Cover and Flip Stand in Black Leather – Business Savvy and Practical
There’s been some buzz brewing over Snugg cases. Where there is smoke, there is usually fire, and this is one of those instances. Snugg is producing quality ‘Leather’ iPad cases, and the company is leaving it’s customers satisfied, and their iPads protected. We think they could use a facelift to their website, as their product looks much better in person than it does in their pictures. To be clear, this iPad case is not actually leather. It is a leather/vinyl combination described by Snugg as ‘PU Leather’. It feels similar to the real McCoy, but it’s not, and their description can be a little misleading. Still, a great case. Here is our review…

Construction
Like it’s distressed brown leather brethren (see our review here) the black leather case from Snugg is not made from real leather either. If you’re really after a true, authentic, leather case, then this probably isn’t the case for you. For most people, it’s close enough to leather to satisfy them, and not near as many animals had to be sacrificed to protect your iPad. You’ve got to look pretty closely at it to realize it’s ‘PU Leather’. ’PU’ is a term used by Snugg to describe this material. It’s a combination of a super thin strip of leather and vinyl. For all intents and purposes, it’s not true leather, but that’s not all bad either.
Around the edges, you’ll notice some white accent stitching. It’s seems to be of high quality, and while we don’t have a seamstress handy to attest to it’s integrity, we’re willing to bet that the stitching will hold up just fine to typical everyday use. On the cover you’ll see a subtly embossed Snugg logo. Overall, the construction is quality.

Flip it over and you’ll see a flap to stand it up, a cutout for the camera, and a series of 3 small holes for the speaker. Open the case up, and on the inside you’ll see an elastic hand strap, and your iPad framed nicely inside a leather border. The iPad is secured with a small flap that velcro’s in to place behind your device. The inside is comprised of a different material than the outer shell. Its more of a ‘suede’ type of material, and it matches the rest of the case nicely. This Snugg case is also auto wake/sleep compatible, and this is accomplished with a little magnet built in to the front cover of the case. Not only does this take advantage of one of the iPads native features, but it also assists in keeping the case closed.

Overall, the case fit the iPad nicely, and we found all the cutouts to be appropriately placed and sized.

As a Stand…
If you need to stand your iPad up using this Snugg case, you have two options. Unfortunately, they are both in landscape orientation, and this is one of the downsides with this case. The back of the case flips around and slides underneath the little flap where it is held in place. In a pinch, you could probably get creative and figure out a way to stand this case up in portrait orientation, but these two options are the only two ways that will give you much stability.
What you need to think about
First of all, the name is a little misleading. It’s not actual leather. Again, if this is something that really matters to you, then you may want to consider something else. If looking, and feeling very close to real leather is good enough for you, then that is obviously a non-issue. Also, this case doesn’t provide any corner protection. While it may make the case slightly more stylish, it does leave your iPad vulnerable in the event of a drop. If it lands perfectly on the corner, the possibility for damage is there. A third downside we noted with this case was the fact that the rear flap has the potential to lose it’s rigidity. If you don’t use the stand feature a whole lot, this may not be an issue. If you stand your iPad up every night at your bedside, chances are you will probably wear this little flap out.

Our review in Summary
This is a great case. There is a reason why so many people are more than satisfied with it. That said, there are a few things to think about. Before you make your decision, we want to at least make you aware of those things. Chances are, you can probably live with them. In our opinion, at $29 (through the link at the top of this page), this case is a great deal. It’s attractive, durable, and (as long as you don’t drop your iPad on the corner) it does a fine job of protecting your device. It is for these reasons that we chose to give the Snugg Black Leather iPad case a 4 star rating, and we feel confident recommending it to our readers.
